Description Habitat: Shady, wooded areas; near streams.
Plant: Bushy, leafy perennial shrub 2 to 4 feet tall.
Leaves: Large heart-shaped leaves, 2 to 4 inches long with prominent veins; often with 3 to 5 lobes; toothed edges.
Inflorescence: Bright red blossom with tightly wrapped petals, about an inch tall with long, protruding stamen column.
Bloom Period: June to October.
Fruit: Red, smooth, apple-like fruit about 1 inch across and 1/2-inch tall.
