Description Habitat: Deep, sandy soils in open areas in fields, grasslands, prairies and shrublands
Plant: Erect annual, 4 to nearly 10 feet tall, much-branched, especially in upper portions; stems covered with white, woolly hairs.
Leaves: Hairy, mostly alternate, ovate leaves 6 to 10 inches long and 4 to 8 inches wide on petioles 3/4 to 4 inches long; bases are more or less cordate; edges are usually entire, rarely serrulate; surfaces covered with dense, woolly hairs adding to their silvery appearance.
Inflorescence: Bright yellow composite flower heads up to 3-1/2+ inches across with 15 to 20 rays surrounding 150+ brown central disk florets; involucre with 20-35 ovate to lanceolate-ovate phyllaries, up to 0.7 inches long and 0.3 inches wide, surfaces usually densely hairy and gland-dotted.
Bloom Period: Late summer and fall.
