| Description |
Habitat: Dry, (usually) sandy soils in open woods, prairies and disturbed areas. Plant: Erect annual 1 to 5 feet tall, one to several branched woody stems. Leaves: Alternate, compound, each up to 1-1/2 inches long with 8 to 15 pairs of small leaflets, 1/4 to 5/8 inch long with smooth to small-hairy edges and mucronate tips. Inflorescence: Flowers in short racemes arising above leaf axils, each flower 1 to 1-1/2 inch across, with 5 yellow petals of unequal size, upper four petals with red spot near base, lower petal larger/broader; dark red stamens. Only one blooming at a time on each stem, withering by mid-day. Bloom Period: June to October. Fruit: Flat linear to oblong pods, 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches long.
